Many parents around the world enjoy hours and hours working on their model train layouts. Train modeling is very popular these days, in fact it´s been popular for more than a century. Many train collectors share the same memories when it comes to scale trains, they say that their first experience with model train layouts they had was a toy train running around the Christmas tree, or perhaps a wooden, basic train presented to them by their parents. Just a simple locomotive with one or two train cars looping around an oval-shaped train track was enough to get them into this wonderful world of model trains. Imagine the emotion of giving your kid his first toy train, and see him smile while he watches the train running and making its characteristic sounds.
If you´re into this hobby, you probably have in mind what type of train you want get for your child. But for those parents a little bit confused about the scales, sizes, gauges and types we are going go through some considerations before you buy that model train for your kid.
First, you have to consider that children are naturally attracted by toys, including train toys. At first your kid may seem to be really interested in the train, but after some days of week he might get bored or just lose interest in his new train. In such case you need to find out whether he´s going take into the scale trains hobby or it would be just another toy that will be left after some time. How can you find it out? Probably the best way to do it is to give him a basic train set; a wooden one will be perfect. These train sets and very affordable and durable at the same time. If you realized that your kid develops real interests in trains then you can go ahead and get him a better train set. Better doesn´t mean bigger, you still need to consider some other aspects before buying a big set with a huge locomotive.
Now, if your child is between four and seven years old, you want to give him a train set that attracts them even more. The classic black locomotive and some square-shape train cars might not create the same effect as a Thomas train set, which is colorful and simple, the perfect match for young children.
If you have an older, between nine and eleven years old, you may want to get him a small electric train set or a bigger scale train set. Reputable manufacturers offer several scale train sets, and you can always find something that suites your need, considering your budget at that moment, the space you have in your house to place the whole train layout and your kid´s age and interest. It´s always better to stick to the well-known manufacturers that have been around for years, this will ensure you higher quality for the money you´re investing.
