G Scale Trains

The G scale for model trains was invented by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwer, which was founded in 1881. As this kind of railroading was often referred to as ‘Garden Railroading’, the scale was assigned the letter G, which in German stands for the word groß meaning ‘big’. In the United States, the biggest G scale trains manufacturers are Bachmann and Aristocraft.

The G scale category has the largest model trains available, and the difference between the sizes of G scale model trains and trains of other scales is quite obvious. Model railroads that are built on the G scale mostly have a size of 1:22 of a real train. O scale trains, also belonging to the family of large-scale trains, are about 1:48 the size of actual trains, and half that of regular G scale trains. G scale model trains usually have a height of 6 inches and length of around 27 inches. Like other large-scale trains, G scale trains run on No. 1 gauge track with a measurement of 45mm in between each rail. Tracks are mostly made of brass, so little maintenance is needed save doing a bit of cleaning with a cloth every now and then.

Due to their sturdiness, G scale trains are mostly run in outdoor garden settings. That is also the reason why parents are comfortable buying this set of trains for their children as it is guaranteed to last for years. They can also be used indoors depending upon the make-up used on the trains. G scale trains allow an ideal pastime for parents and their children to have fun with each other.

Since model railroading has been going on for so long, trains of all scales are easily available in markets today, with the G scale being one of them.
