Facts About The HO Model Train

Different model train hobbyists have different preferences. Even with enough space available, a model railroader may want to create a huge and complex layout for his single train to run around freely going through several tunnels, visiting small towns, forests and mountains in the same trip while another one may find more interesting having several trains running in a limited space, in a model train layout with several levels, bridges, electrical mechanisms and just a few extra accessories. How all these desires and needs can be met? Quite easy actually, by having several scales, gauges and sizes of trains. In America, the scale with more popularity is the HO scale. HO model trains have a scale ratio of 1:87, which is half the scale ration of O scale trains, 1:48. HO mode trains run on a train track of 16.5mm gauge.

Let´s consider outdoor model trains. We can refer to the O scale as the smaller trains design for garden and outdoor environments, that´s why this train may not fit every railroader´s needs. Instead, many people prefers the HO scale trains because they can be use indoors, but is still big enough to deliver details and realism. You can consider these trains as the biggest ones among the trains considered small, or designed for small areas. Even though the HO trains require some available space to be able to run as desired, it gives the chance to have a decent train layout setup. Which is particularly great of this scale is that you have the benefits of big trains, such as attention to details and durability, and will also allow your children to  transition from toy trains to  HO scale trains without exposing their fingers or hands to damage.

HO scale trains were produced first in England, around 1930. Manufacturers wanted the HO scale to share the market with the existing OO scale, but it didn´t happen and the OO scale remained and the most popular one in the UK. Hobbyists in America wanted to have a realistic model train layout, which was offered by the HO scale during the 1950´s, that made the HO scale very popular, in the 60´s its popularity was still increasing and eventually it became the most popular scale for model train followers. From that point on, it was easier for model train manufacturers to offer a wide variety of accessories, rolling stock, locomotives and sets.

With manufacturers and suppliers all over the globe, local hobby shops and online stores, railroaders can spend several hours or even days to find the desired piece to be included in the collection. If you ever imagined building an impressive model train layout with small towns, miniature people, parking lots, landscapes, lamp posts, traffic lights, recreation spots, factories and many other elements like those, then HO scale trains is what you´re looking for. Once you set up all these elements in your layout and your locomotive starts running on the train track, it will be a lot of fun.
